Why choose DNS?Unlike most educations, DNS offers a very wide range of experiences that can be used for many different purposes in life, and many careers... by Neil Newman, England (graduated in 2004) gnuneo@yahoo.co.uk
DNS has the following characteristics, which gives it this freedom: It is mainly experience based, for example the Asia travel for 4 months, and the worldwide teaching practice, as well as direct and many-fold experiences in various schools here in Denmark, from being a teaching assistant, or school volunteer, through to being a full teacher, learning to design, organise, and implement a full teaching plan for your students.
It also utilises the extremely modern study system of Denmark, which is superior not only to virtually all of the world, but also the vast majority of Europe, with its emphasis not on memorised knowledge, but ability and enthusiasm – as the exams are face-to-face conversations with the examiners.
It teaches self-confidence, self-support, specific and general pedagogical abilities, and what is possible to do and change in school systems – and it does this using team support, so you will also learn how to work in modern, team-organised ‘goal-based functional units’, equipping you for tackling whatever your later life throws at you, from Parenthood to President.
The study part of the education covers many areas, from Social Science, Psychology, Mathematics, English, Danish, Art, Geography, Pedagogy, Didactics, History – and to some extent, these choices will be up to you to decide between, allowing you to fill holes in your current knowledge, or to improve in areas you already have studied in.
It will take you across at least 3 continents, and possibly more, you will learn about other cultures and religions, other peoples and other lands, not by reading or watching TV, but by going there yourself, meeting these peoples, seeing these lands – living there, and learning in the only true method, direct experience. You will see how Indian villagers live, much as they have done for thousands of years, you will see how modern China has built new cities – and how they live in them, how do they see the future.
You will have the opportunity to meet children from all over the world, from the most disadvantaged of Scandinavia, to the most advantaged of Southern Asia, and you will get the opportunity to tell them about other ways of living, other ways of behaving, and learn how they view the world, you will gain such perspective from this that you will almost weep sometimes, wishing these experiences were a part of everyone’s education.
One thing you will never do in DNS, is regret joining.
