The world, the team and you!Lisi and her Asia travell! That could be the headline of the first year in DNS. The first year in DNS is definitely a big adventure, on the study programme is a four month travel to Asia. But it is not a random tourist or backpacking travel, it is a challenging journey to some of the poorest places on planet earth, it is travel to see the real life, visiting NGO's and also helping where a helping hand is needed. We went through India, Laos, Vietnam and China. Who is we? We is my team, so over 20 young people from Europe with different ages, background, languages and education level. Sounds multicultural and it is indeed multicultural. The study methods on the travel are investigations. What is an investigation? For instance, if you wanna know more about slums, you go to slums, talk to people in the slums, stay there, visit NGO's.
For an investigation you have about 5 to 7 days time until you meet your team again and make presentation about what you found out. You share your knowledge with the team and the team is sharing with you. And thats a knowledge boosting tool! You not only know how's it feel to live in a slum, you also get know about the beggar life, the sewage system of India or the situation of farmers.
As the computer possibilities are rare, you will play theater, write poems, make songs, make interactive stories to present the result of the investigation. Yes, that means action.
So what is an investigation? An investigation is learning by adventuring. I like this way of learning very much. What we have been studying? The real life, or a mixture of living geography, politics, culture or social science. To smell poverty, to feel injustice, to live the culture is a life changing experience. The cold numbers to which we western people are used every day got now faces. It's a difference now to read or listen to news, it's a difference now if I hear that the food prices are gone up. It does not affect really our lifes, but for other means this to fight for life. It does affect Surak, Ganesh or other people we got to know in Asia. Many times we got help from local people, many times we had special moments and great experiences of hospitality. Many times we were glad to had travel in a team. It's not only to use the power of community to share housework, it is also to speak about the experience, to have a shoulder to lean and to learn from each other. Now I know not only more about the world, I also know more about my teammates and myself. Getting to know the team with who you life, work, study, cry and fight the next four years. Often it was a pleasure, sometimes not. haha, of course there were time of arguing with the brothers and sisters. Now we know from everyone not only the sugar sides, also the salty spicy ones. Yes you read right, the team is now for me like a a big family.
I have been traveling a lot. I thought I made a difference. But then I started DNS and went to Asia ...
PS: what about the teachers? The teachers are not only teachers, the teachers are our coach, our mothers and our friend. Something special.
